What is Eyeliner Tattooing?

Depending on which look you want to create, semi-permanent eyeliner can be applied in a thin line, a thicker line, a winged eyeliner or as a lash line enhancement, where the gaps between eyelashes can be filled in to create the illusion of fuller and thicker lashes, giving more definition and shape of the eye. Semi-permanent eyeliner is great for those who are looking for a hassle-free solution to eye make-up application or who are active and need to still have a presentable appearance.

If you are looking for a super natural look having the tattoo pigment inserted as a lash line enhancement, rather than as eyeliner, would be recommended, as this procedure is deposited pigment between the eyelashes, filling in any visible gaps. This technique gives the appearance of a thicker lash line, which creates a more defined eye, without it being too dramatic, perfect for those of you who prefer to wear light coverage to no makeup.

There is a choice of pigment colours available: brown, ebony and grey to suit all ages and styles, not just black.

Many people opt for a permanent eyeliner treatment because it adds definition to the lash line, and they want a subtle enhancement. Semi-permanent eyeliner saves time for those with busy lifestyles and looks great for holidays — no more smudged eye makeup. This treatment is also popular with clients who struggle to create symmetry in their makeup due to shaky hands or weaker eyesight.

The most common styles are:

  • Lash line enhancement — Recommended for clients with ptosis (when the upper eyelid droops over the eye), subtle definition through the lash line with a soft blend.
  • Winged eyeliner — Recommended for clients who have nice natural eyelids and like thick-winged eyeliners. A wing/flick extends above the crease of your lids on the outer corners.
  • Shaded eyeliner — A soft, smokey line diffusing out from the lash line like a smudged pencil.

Semi-permanent eyeliner can last from 8 to 18 months, depending on how well you maintain them and how easily your skin absorbs the pigment.

Firstly, our artist will have a consultation with you where the whole process will be explained. When you are satisfied with all the information and are ready for the treatment, the area will be numbed using a topical cream. Then, you will consult with your artist about your chosen style and liner colour. Once you have decided this, your artist will map out your liner design using a pencil — this will allow you to make any amendments to your style before it gets tattooed on.

Once you have agreed on a style and colour, your artist will begin tattooing. We use body-safe pigments and machines designed especially for treatments in this delicate area. During the process, your eyelids will be numbed with a second topical cream, helping you avoid any possible pain.

Once the treatment is over, our artist will perform an eye bath — this is when your eyes are flushed with sterile water to cleanse any residual ink or debris from the treatment. Once this step is completed, your artist will go over your aftercare and send you on your way!

A numbing cream is applied to the area before the eye tattoo procedure, making the whole process relatively painless. Some people with sensitivity or a lower pain tolerance may find the procedure mildly uncomfortable, but generally, most clients experience little or no pain. Most clients report a tickling sensation due to the movement of the eyelashes. However, thanks to the continuous application of numbing cream in the area, there should be little but bearable pain.

Permanent eyeliner is perfectly safe. It is a technique that now has decades of expertise behind it, and artists are highly qualified and educated in the entire process. The eyes’ waterline and the corners are never tattooed, and the eyes are closed for most of the treatment. However, despite improvements in inks and techniques, applying an eyeliner tattoo is basically the same as a traditional tattoo, so some risks apply.

here may be some discomfort and swelling in the area for the first 24 hours; however, this is totally normal and will reduce if you follow the correct aftercare advice. Do not wear any eye makeup for 1 week, and avoid rubbing the eye area during the healing process (4 weeks). Keep the area dry for around 5 days, and apply soothing balm as your artist recommends.

As with other PMU treatments, the pigment will appear to fade; however, this is part of the skin healing, and the pigment will push back up to its full colour at around the 4-week mark. You’ll be due for a retouch appointment around 4-6 weeks after your first treatment to fill any gaps.

  • Do not rub the skin around the treated area or remove flaking skin.
  • Refrain from applying any creams, serums and other personal care products.
  • Wait ten days before applying mascara and other eye makeup products.
  • Avoid exposure to water during your shower, swimming on the beach, using sheet masks or crying.
  • Keep away from high heat, including direct sunlight, saunas, spa baths and facial steaming.
  • Reschedule perm and tinting appointments for two weeks after your treatment.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses for 24 hours post-treatment.

When scheduling a semi-permanent eyeliner procedure, follow your technician’s pre- and post-aftercare to ensure an even flawless finish. Without due care, you may be left with a patchy application, poor definition or skin irritation around the treated area. Other risks include (rare) reactions to pigments, scarring or nodules.

Before and after your treatment, your technician will discuss how the procedure will be performed and how you can best care for your lashes so you can stay informed and confident from consultation to end. While semi-permanent eyeliner is long-lasting, many people need a touch-up at the 12-month mark to maintain its eye-framing finish.

An eyeliner tattoo is a semi-permanent makeup procedure where pigment is tattooed along the lash line to enhance the eyes. It creates the appearance of defined and fuller lashes, offering a long-lasting solution to daily makeup application.

The eyeliner tattoo procedure typically takes around one to two hours to complete. This includes the consultation, numbing process and the actual tattooing. The duration may vary based on the complexity of the desired eyeliner style and the client’s skin sensitivity.

The retouch appointment for your eyeliner tattoo is crucial to achieving flawless and long-lasting results. Around four to six weeks after your initial procedure, this follow-up session allows the PMU artist to ensure that your eyeliner has settled beautifully and fills in any minor gaps that may have appeared during the healing process.

If your eyeliner tattoo fades over time, there’s no need to worry! Semi-permanent makeup, including eyeliner tattoos, is designed to fade gradually over months or years, depending on various factors such as skin type, lifestyle and exposure to the sun. As the pigment naturally breaks down, the eyeliner may become less vibrant.

If you want to maintain your eyeliner’s fresh and defined look, you can opt for a touch-up session every year to keep it looking its best.
